5 Packing Tips to Protect Your Breakables

One of the greatest moving worries is the maintenance of your breakables during the move. You very well know that the breakables are extremely susceptible to random cracking, shattering or breaking leading to the diminishing of their respective values. Such items include dishes, mirrors, glasses etc. Most of these items are extremely delicate and call for additional caution while handling and protection.

Here are the top 5 tips to protect your breakables:

•    Pack your breakables at last
Make sure to pack up everything else before you start packing your breakables. This is because you shall be required to invest a good amount of time on packing these breakables. The time required is longer than that of packing the less delicate items that usually include the daily-use items. This to give your undivided focus on packing the valuable and delicate items, you should complete the packing of your less delicate items in the beginning itself.

•    Go for appropriate sized boxes
It is crucial to select the proper size of boxes that shall be solely used to pack breakable items. After all, this is what is meant by taking extra caution while handling and moving your breakables! You just cannot try to stuff them into a random large box. These boxes could easily become overloaded and unbearably heavy to carry. A proper dish pack should be employed to pack dishes, cups, and other small breakable items. Dish packs are boxes that are specially designed to move breakables. These are usually made of thicker cardboard and might contain divider inserts to support absorption of the shock of any unwelcomed movements!

•    Take extra measures while packing
Boxes are generally stacked several boxes high when loaded into a moving vehicle or storage unit. So your belongings might easily be damaged if sufficient protection is not provided. While packing, make sure each box contains a soft bed of newspaper, tissue paper, or packing paper to provide an overall cushioning effect. You can line each side of the box with crumpled paper to enhance the shock absorption. Make sure that the top and bottom of the box have about at least 6 inches of crumpled paper. Furthermore, you can also put an additional layer of cardboard on the top and sides. Your aim should be to make sure that the box is slightly overfilled with cushioning so that it cannot be easily pushed down after it is taped. The clearest sign that the packing paper provided in the box is not enough is when you hear the breakables clunking or rattling in the box while it is full. While doing the packing, make sure to place breakable items in the box in such an order that the heaviest, sturdiest breakables are at the bottom and the dainty ones are at the top.

Make sure to fill up all the empty spaces. The box should be packed tightly. Wherever you get blank spaces, fill them with packing paper or other items to facilitate the shock absorption. Smaller wrapped items can be placed within larger items to offer more support. You can make use of several other items such as big plastic bottles, packing peanuts, foam etc. to make the support more robust for the breakable items by enhancing the feature of shock absorption.

•    Do proper wrapping
Make sure to wrap each breakable item individually. This shall increase the protection largely. Make sure to place items in an upright position on a sheet of paper. Do the wrapping in a thorough manner and place another sheet of crumpled paper inside. While packing jars or vases, do the packing tightly with paper to ensure their utmost safety. You can use several layers of paper to wrap thin glassware or very delicate items. This certainly offers additional protection to your precious glassware. Dish packs usually have dividers that separate items, imparting higher level of protection.

•    Make use of packing tape
Make sole use of your packing tape to tape up boxes. Packing tapes are usually wider and stronger than other types of tape. It is extremely essential for you to ensure that your boxes are set up and taped in a proper manner. Make sure that the bottom and top of the box is taped properly. Use additional tape to secure the ends properly and to make sure that the box is square!

Other Handy Tips

Your movers might not be that alarmed while loading the boxes. So, it is your responsibility to make sure that you advise your hired movers on which items are fragile.  Your movers should take extra care to handle and move these boxes. So, you need to make them alert and aware of these boxes containing the most delicate items. Do the marking of each box properly such that they can be easily identified as the boxes containing the fragile items. Label each box with the label “FRAGILE”. Use permanent and dark markers for labeling these boxes. After all, you need to make sure that these labels are not easy erased or washed away due to rain or any other such unforeseen circumstances. Also, this shall increase the likelihood of your breakables to remain safe and intact by the time they are shifted to the new place.

In case of a local move, you might not have the time to pack your breakables. Also, you might not be lucky enough to have sufficient savings or money to hire a moving company. You have no option but to do it yourself. Just be positive thinking that self-move is the best way to have full control over your breakables throughout the move. Build up your confidence that you can take care of your valuables the best.

Make sure you do not end up packing these ultra-delicate items in a rush. You need to do the packing with a calm and composed mind. If possible, take tips from your moving company experts to do the proper packing. In fact, if a local moving company is hired, usually they are the ones who do the entire packing. They are more reliable since they have more years of experience in this field.
